Europe can be comprehended outside its interaction with other cultures. Europe is a fragmented space that always strives toward some form of integration. There is a profound, non-negotiable need for communication with the world. Galway City Library will present an evening of Finnish poetry and music. At any stage of the evening, audience members may read aloud a Finnish poem or paragraph, which has been translated into English. The translated poems will be available in the library in advance. Mexican literary magazine seeks emerging Irish writers

Joaquín Guillén Márquez, one of the editors of Mexican literary magazine Cuadrivio (http://cuadrivio.net/) has been in touch with Over The Edge to let us know that the magazine is planning a special edition devoted to emerging Irish literature.

Cuadrivio has already published some of the best young writers of Mexico. The magazine is seeking poem and stories by emerging writers in Ireland who are under the age of 35 which they will translate into Spanish for the issue which will be launched on Bloomsday 2011.

Jean O'Brien to read at September Writers' Gathering

The Over The Edge September Writers’ Gathering presents readings by poets from Ireland, the UK and Australia. Jean O’Brien, James Byrne, Niall McDevitt & Geoff Page will read their work at Café 8 @ The Museum, Spanish Arch, Galway on Friday, September 10th, 8pm. The evening will also see the launch of Behind The Masks, a collection of work by the Advanced Poetry Workshop at Galway Arts Centre, co-edited by Marie Cadden, Denise Garvey, Nicki Griffin & Tom Lavelle.

Jean O'Brien is a Dubliner now living in the Midlands. She has published three collections of poetry, The Shadow Keeper (Salmon, 1997), Dangerous Dresses (Bradshaw Books, 2005) & Lovely Legs (Salmon Poetry, 2009). She facilitates creative writing classes for venues as diverse as the Irish Writers’ Centre, Dublin City Council and Mountjoy and Limerick Prisons. She was Writer-in-Residence for Co. Laois in 2005 and received Fish International Poetry Award in 2008. Her poetry was described by Fiona Sampson in the Irish Times as “effortless writing, graceful and exact as any pirouette in its insight”.

James Byrne is the Editor and co-founder of The Wolf poetry magazine. His debut collection, Passages of Time, was published by Flipped Eye in 2003. Blood / Sugar his second collection was published recently by Arc. He is the co-editor of Voice Recognition: 21 Poets for the 21st Century, an anthology of British and Irish poets under 35, published by Bloodaxe in 2009, and the Collected Poems of Hope Mirrlees, forthcoming from Carcanet in 2011. In 2008 he won the Treci Trg poetry prize in Serbia. As a result his Selected Poems was published (in a bilingual edition) in Belgrade in 2009. Since 2006 James has taught the regular Wolf Workshops, which have helped many students with first book and pamphlet publications. He was born in 1977 and lives in London and New York.

Niall McDevitt is an Irish poet based in London. He has worked as an actor/ musician in Neil Oram’s 24-hour play The Warp, Ken Campbell’s Pidgin Macbeth, and John ‘Crow’ Constable’s The Southwark Mysteries. For radio, he was resident Pidgin poet/translator on John Peel’s Home Truths. As an activist, McDevitt has campaigned to secure the future of the Rimbaud/Verlaine House at 8 Royal College Street, and for the release of poet Saw Wai from Insein prison in Burma. His poetry collection ‘b/w’ was published this year by Waterloo Press. Fans of his poetry include such luminaries as Patti Smith and John Cooper Clarke.

Geoff Page is an Australian poet who has published eighteen collections of poetry as well as two novels, four verse novels and several other works including anthologies, translations and a biography of the jazz musician, Bernie McGann. He retired at the end of 2001 from being in charge of the English Department at Narrabundah College, a position he had held since 1974. He has won several awards, including the Queensland Premier’s Prize for Poetry and the 2001 Patrick White Literary Award. Selections from his work have been translated into Chinese, Hindi, German, Serbian, Slovenian and Greek. Geoff is delighted to be returning to Galway having previously read for Over The Edge in 2007.

Behind The Masks is a collection of poems by participants in the renowned Thursday afternoon Advanced Poetry Workshop at Galway Arts Centre. The poems are accompanied by a foreword by Galway City Council’s Arts Officer, James Harrold, and a thought provoking introductory essay by co-editors, Marie Cadden, Denise Garvey, Nicki Griffin & Tom Lavelle.

The National Campaign for The Arts has set out the following goals and demands for the upcoming budget:

"There is now a broad consensus that the arts will play a dynamic part in Ireland’s economic and social recovery. To maintain their role as a significant driver of employment, cultural tourism, the creative industries, our collective wellbeing and international reputation, NCFA asks that the next budget will:

Maintain current levels of funding to the statutory agencies for the arts, including Irish Film Board, Culture Ireland and in particular The Arts Council, whose investment in the development of Irish artists generates the cultural assets that are central to our future.

Make significant new funding available to the arts and culture sector to build on its cultural tourism potential, through the creation of a dedicated cultural tourism fund.

Protect local authority arts funding and its essential role in the cultural diversity, social cohesion, economic impact, participation and identity of communities and regions."

Workshop participants recently published an anthology of poems, Behind The Masks, with a foreword by Galway City Council's Arts Officer James Harrold. Participants have won prizes for their work, published books and read their work at some of Ireland's leading literary festivals.

The winners in the fiction and poetry categories and the 2010 Over The Edge New Writer of The Year will be announced at the September 'Over The Edge: Open Reading' in Galway City Library on Thursday, September 30th (6.30-8pm).

This year’s competition judge is James Martyn. James is from Galway where he is a member of The Talking Stick Writing Workshop. James writes both fiction and poetry. He has had work broadcast on both RTE and BBC and won the Listowel Writers Week Originals Short Story Competition. His work has appeared in The Cúirt Journal, West 47, Books Ireland, Crannóg, TheSunday Tribune, The Stinging Fly and The Shop. He was shortlisted for a Hennessy Award in 2006. He was shortlisted for the Francis McManus award in both 2007 and 2008 and for The William Trevor International Short Story Competition in 2007. His first collection of poetry, Shedding Skin, was recently published by Arlen House.

Susan was born in Philadelphia in 1966 to a Belfast-born mother. She holds an MA in Writing from the University of San Francisco. Her poems and short stories have been published widely in the US, UK and Ireland. Susan's stories have been short-listed for many awards, and in 2005 she received an Irish Arts Council Bursary for her fiction. American Girls, a volume of her short stories, was published by Lapwing in 2007. Since 2003, Susan and her husband Kevin Higgins have organised the successful Over the Edge reading series, showcasing new writers. Susan teaches creative writing at Galway Technical Institute, Galway Arts Centre, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology and on the Brothers of Charity Away With Words programme. Big Pink Umbrella (Salmon Poetry, 2008) is the first full collection of her poetry. One of her poems has been chosen by editor, Mathew Sweeney, for inclusion in Best of Irish Poetry 2010 (Southword Editions). Several of her poems feature in Landing Places: Immigrant Poets in Ireland, edited by Eva Bourke (Dedalus Press, March 2010). Her second collection of poems, Dreams for Breakfast, was published this April by Salmon Poetry.

Daytime Creative Writing with Susan Millar DuMars at Galway Arts Centre

This Autumn Galway Arts Centre presents a daytime class for all those beginner and continuing creative writing students out there, both facilitated by Susan Millar DuMars. Susan writes both poetry and fiction. A collection of her stories, American Girls, was published by Lapwing Press in 2007; she has published two collection of poetry, Big Pink Umbrella (2008) and Dreams For Breakfast both with Salmon Poetry. She is also co-organiser of the Over The Edge reading series which specifically promotes new writers.

The class is suitable for both beginning and continuing creative writing students, working in either poetry or fiction. Students will spend their week responding to writing exercises designed to inspire, rather than inhibit. In class, they will receive gentle feedback on their work from their classmates and from the teacher. The class takes place on Monday afternoons, 2-3.30pm, commencing on Monday September 20th.

Autumn Poetry Workshops @ Galway Arts Centre with Kevin Higgins

This Autumn Galway Arts Centre is offering aspiring poets a choice of three poetry workshops, all facilitated by poet Kevin Higgins, whose best-selling first collection, ‘The Boy With No Face’, published by Salmon Poetry, was short-listed for the 2006 Strong Award for Best First Collection by an Irish poet. Kevin’s second collection of poems, ‘Time Gentlemen, Please’, was published in 2008 by Salmon Poetry and his poetry is discussed in the Cambridge Introduction to Modern Irish Poetry. His third collection ‘Frightening New Furniture’ was published in April by Salmon and his work also appears in the generation defining anthology 'Identity Parade –New British and Irish Poets' (Ed. Roddy Lumsden, Bloodaxe, 2010). Kevin is an experienced workshop facilitator and several of his students have gone on to achieve publication success. One of his workshop participants at Galway Arts Centre won the prestigious Hennessy Award for New Irish Poetry, while several have published collections of their poems.

Each workshop will run for ten weeks, commencing the week of September 20th. They will take place on Tuesday evenings, 7-8.30pm (first class September 21st); on Wednesday afternoons, 2-3.30pm (first class September 22nd) and on Thursday afternoons, 2-4pm (first class September  23rd).

The Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon workshops are open to both complete beginners as well as those who’ve been writing for some time. Creative Writing Night Classes back at GMIT Castlebar

A new course of the highly popular night classes in Creative Writing will commence in GMIT Castlebar on Tuesday September 28th. The course runs for two hours a night for twelve weeks. The classes will suit beginners and improvers.

This is a practical and fun course with the emphasis on writing. Topics covered include what to write about, point of view, setting, style, voice, memoir, flash fiction, short stories, poetry, dialogue, drama, critique and markets. The structure of the classes is very supportive to the often very personal nature of writing. At the end of the course students should have an impressive body of work completed.

Many satisfied students have taken this course over the past number of years. Some have gone on to win prizes and had their work published.

The facilitator, John Corless, is a vastly experienced tutor. He has an MA in Creative Writing and is currently researching a PhD. He has performed his work all over the country including at the Electric Picnic, Force 12 and The Munster Literary Festival. He writes poetry, drama and fiction. He work has been published in several countries. He has won many prizes for his writing.

John’s debut collection, Are you ready? (Salmon Poetry) was published in 2009 and reprinted this year making it one of the biggest selling poetry titles for many years.

John’s poetry is a mix of political and satirical; one critic described it as Paul Durcan meets The Sawdoctors. Another said: "... he shines the tell tale torchlight of his killer wit into all the most embarrassing areas of contemporary Irish life. No-one is safe..." Another said: “…side-splitting humour and tongue-in-cheek commentary are synonymous with John’s poetry…"

North Beach Poetry Nights returns on Monday 13th September at 9pm in The Crane Bar, Sea Road, Galway with Guest Poet: Miceál Kearney, young farmer, ecologist, animal-lover (well, not really kittens) poet and performer without equal, Miceál has won every slam award in Ireland, nearly!

His best-selling debut collection Inheritance, published by Doire Press, will be available for purchase on the night. (It has recently been confirmed that Miceál is no longer considered a threat to the safety of the nation.)

Book Launch & Birthday Reading: Robyn Rowland and Susan Millar DuMars

A powerful reading by two women poets in their prime, followed by a Q&A. Dr Robyn Rowland AO has published twelve books, nine of them poetry. Silence & its tongues (2006) was shortlisted for the 2007 ACT Judith Wright Poetry Prize. Third generation Irish-Australian, Robyn has been reading and teaching in Ireland for 28 years, where she lives part-time in Connemara. She has read her poetry in Portugal, Ireland, the UK, the USA, Greece, Austria, Bosnia, Serbia, Turkey and Italy, where, along with Canada and Japan, she has also been published. Her poetry has been featured often on Australian national radio programs PoeticA and The Spirit of Things. Robyn is known for her moving readings, available on her CDs, Off the tongue and Silver Leaving - Poems & Harp.

Robyn's collection Seasons of doubt & burning: New & Selected Poems covering almost 40 years of publishing, will be launched in September 2010. Robyn, an Honorary Fellow in the School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne, was Deputy Chair of the Board, Australian Poetry Centre (2007-2008); and Professor of Social Inquiry and Women’s Studies at Deakin University (1981–1996), retiring in 1996 with breast cancer and burnout. She was made an Officer in the Order of Australia for her contribution to higher education and women’s health in 1996.

Susan Millar DuMars’ debut poetry collection, Big Pink Umbrella, was published by Salmon Poetry in 2008. Her next collection, Dreams for Breakfast, appeared in April 2010. Her work features in Landing Places, Dedalus’ 2010 anthology of immigrant poetry written in Ireland; and also in The Best Of Irish Poetry 2010. A fiction writer as well, she published a collection of short stories, American Girls, with Lapwing in 2007. She has been the recipient of an Arts Council Literature Bursary. Susan teaches creative writing to adults and to groups with special needs. She lives in Galway, where she and her husband have run the Over the Edge readings series since 2003.

Quick Thinking Poets Needed!

Poets or writers who feel they can rise to the challenge of creating new work on the spot, are wanted for an experimental evening of collaboration with the public on Culture Night Sep 24th Inkstorm Galway, in conjunction with the Spirit Store in Limerick are co-hosting a Poetry Depot, where members of the public provide the inspiration for pieces written by the poets on the night.

A special set of questions to help people generate poetic seeds is already being circulated. On the night people will sit down with a poet and give them a subject and a little information. The poet will then tailor make a piece for the person and read it to them. The commissioner will be recorded reading their poem and their response, and it will all go together on the website. There will be poets of all levels of experience participating, and given this and the time limit, the point is not to expect a flow of masterpieces, but the spontaneity, excitement and rawness of co-creating with the public, and giving them a sense of ownership of the creative process.

The Poetry Depot will take place from 5-7pm in the Milk Market, Limerick, on Culture Night, Fri Sep 24th.

Spiddal Library invites you to a reading in the library on Wednesday, September 8th at 19.30 with Galway poets Gerry Galvin and John Walsh.

Many people know poet Gerry Galvin as a former restaurateur and chef of Drimcong House in Moycullen.Many people will have read the poems displayed throughout his restaurant, but not everyone realized that the author of these poems is Gerry Galvin himself. No Recipe Gerry's debut collection was published by Doire Press in May 2010. Launched by fellow-poet and politician Michael D. Higgins, it has been received very well country-wide. Gerry has read and talked about the poems with Sean Rocks on RTE's Arts Show 'Arena'and on Galway Bay FM with Keith Finnegan. Gerry now lives outside Oughterard.

Poet John Walsh, originally from Derry, has lived in Inverin for twenty-one years. He has published three collections. His latest, Chopping Wood with T.S. Eliot, was published in May this year by Salmon Poetry. John is an engaging reader and performer of his work. He is the organiser and M.C.of the monthly performance poetry event North Beach Poetry Nights in the Crane Bar.

Admission to the reading is free and all are welcome.

North Beach Poetry Nights returns on Monday September 13th with Miceál Kearney as guest poet when the Connaught heat of this year’s All Ireland Poetry Slam Championship will take place.

Loose Lips @ Róisin Dubh

EVERYONE HAS a story, and Loose Lips offer a stage and a microphone to members of the audience who can tell their story, provided it is true, unscripted and doesn’t take longer than five minutes.

The event is hosted by Mags Treanor and special guests, and each month’s session is inspired by a different theme. The story slam takes place every last Wednesday of the month, this month that date is August 25, and the slam is limited to 10 stories.

Open mic events have become very popular, and although the Róisín has regularly hosted open mic sessions for budding comedians and poets, the difference with Loose Lips is that it is not a platform to discover up and coming writers or comedians, and it is not a competition. Loose Lips is an evening where anybody can just come along and tell their story, whether it be tragic, heart rendering or hilarious.

If you wish to participate you can register on the night, when 10 names will be pulled from a hat to decide who gets to tell their story.

The theme for this month’s Loose Lips event is Siblings and it will take place on Wednesday August 25th, 9pm. €5 on the door.

Gwyneth Lewis was the first National Poet of Wales (2005) and her words appear over the Wales Millennium Centre, opened in 2004. Educated at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen, a bilingual school near Pontypridd, and at Oxford, Columbia and Harvard Universities, she has written oratorio as well as having written on clinical depression and Two in a Boat—The True Story of a Marital Rite of Passage, inspired by a sailing journey during which her husband was diagnosed with cancer. Her poetry collections in English include Parables and Faxes (1995), Chaotic Angels—Poems in English (2005) and A Hospital Odyssey (2010, all Bloodaxe).

Maurice Riordan (b. Lisgoold, Co, Cork, 1953) is the author of three collections of poetry, A Word from the Loki (Faber, 1995, a PBS choice), the Whitbread shortlisted Floods (Faber, 2000) and The Holy Land (Faber, 2007) which received the Michael Hartnett Award. A Next Generation poet, he has been Poetry Editor of Poetry London and is currently Professor of Poetry at Sheffield Hallam University, has translated the work of Maltese poet Immanuel Mifsud (Confidential Reports, 2005), has edited and co-edited anthologies on science, space and ecology, and has edited a selection of Hart Crane’s poems for Faber’s Poet to Poet series (2008).

Both judges will read all poems submitted.

August 'Over The Edge: Open Reading' with Patrick Cotter, Sarah Clancy & Aron Costello

The August Over The Edge: Open Reading takes place in Galway City Library, St. Augustine Street, Galway on Thursday, August 26th, 6.30-8pm. The Featured Readers are Sarah Clancy, Aron Costello & Patrick Cotter. The reading is sponsored by Poetry Ireland.

Sarah Clancy is from Salthill. She is a participant in the Galway Arts Centre Poetry Workshops facilitated by Kevin Higgins and has previously read her poetry at North Beach Poetry Nights and the Over The Edge open-mic. This year, in a display of what she describes as beginners luck, Sarah was shortlisted in both the poetry section of the WOW awards 2010, and the Listowel Writers Week Collection of Poetry Competition 2010. Her poems feature in the soon to be launched publication of work by participants in the advanced poetry workshop at Galway Arts Centre.

Aron Costello was born in Tuam in 1975. He has lived in Galway City for the past eleven years. Writing since the age of six, he has completed dozens of short stories, plays, poems, and songs. A fan of the Horror/Thriller genre, he is currently finishing his fifth (and sixth!) novels, and has been longlisted in the Over The Edge New Writer of The Year competition. Aron is also reading his work at the Tuam Arts Festival, the evening before his Over The Edge reading.

Patrick Cotter was born Cork in 1963. His work has appeared in the anthologies Separate Islands: Contemporary British and Irish poetry (Quarry, Ontario), Irish Poetry Now (Wolfhound), Jumping off Shadows - Some Contemporary Irish Poets (Cork University Press), The Irish Eros (Gill & Macmillan), The Backyards of Heaven (Newfoundland), Something Beginning with P (O'Brien Press) and in The Great Book of Ireland. In 1984 he was shortlisted for a Hennessy Award. Cotter was runner-up in the Patrick Kavanagh award in 1988. His poems have been translated into Chinese, Estonian, Italian, Norse, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish. He currently directs the Munster Literature. Patrick’s first full-length collection of poems Perplexed Skin was published by Arlen House in 2008. Making Music followed in 2009.

There will be an open-mic when the Featured Readers have finished. This is open to anyone who has a poem or story to share. New readers are always especially welcome. 2010 Over The Edge New Writer of The Year competition sponsored by Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop & Michael D. Higgins TD

In 2010 Over The Edge is continuing its exciting annual creative writing competition. The competition is open to both poets and fiction writers. The total prize money is €1,000. The best fiction entry will win €300. The best poetry entry will win €300. One of these will then be chosen as the overall winner and will receive an additional €400, giving the overall winner total prize money of €700 and the title Over The Edge New Writer of The Year 2010. The 2010 Over The Edge New Writer of The Year will be a Featured Reader at a reading to be scheduled in Galway City Library in Winter 2010/11. Salmon Poetry will read without prejudice a manuscript submitted to them by the winner in the poetry category.

Entries should be sent to Over The Edge, New Writer of the Year competition, 3 Carbry Road, Newcastle, Galway, Ireland with an accompanying SAE. Entries will be judged anonymously, so do not put your name on your poem(s) or story. Put your contact details on a separate sheet.

Criteria: fiction of up to three thousand words, three poems of up to forty lines, or one poem of up to one hundred lines. Multiple entries are acceptable but each must be accompanied by a fee. The fee for one entry is €10. The fee for multiple entries is €7.50 per entry e.g. two entries will cost €15, three entries €22.50 and so on. Fee payable by cheque or money order to Over The Edge. To take part you must be at least sixteen years old by September 1st 2010 and not have a book published or accepted for publication in that genre. Chapbooks excepted. Entries must not have been previously published or be currently entered in any other competition.

David Mohan is based in Dublin and writes poetry and short stories. He has been published in The Sunday Tribune, The Stony Thursday Book, Southword, and the anthology Night and Day. He has won the Hennessy Sunday Tribune Poetry Award, as well as the 2008 overall New Irish Writer Award. Fiction section winner: Orla Higgins

Orla Higgins lives in Galway and recently graduated with an MA in Writing from NUIG. She has won the Over the Edge New Fiction Writer Competition in 2009 for Thin Blue Line and her work has been published in Ropes and Crannog. 'Will Days Indeed Come: I Come From There' - POEMS ON ISRAEL & PALESTINE

Over The Edge is looking for poems from poets worldwide on any aspect of the Israel-Palestine issue. The poems can be from any point of view. The only criteria being that they must work as poems and be in some way relevant to what has been happening in that part of the world. 

We also welcome poems from those living in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank on any aspect of life as it is lived there.

We will publish the poems as part of a special feature here on the Over The Edge website.

The title of the project Will Days Indeed Come: I Come From There is borrowed from the titles of two poems: Will Days Indeed Come by Leah Goldberg and I Come From There by Mahmoud Darwish.

Over The Edge in association with Westside Arts Festival presents a reading by the Westside Writers and the 2010 Over The Edge Summer Open-mic at Westside Library, Seamus Quirke Road on Wednesday, July 21st from 7 pm.

The Westside Library Writers, who have participated in a series of workshops facilitated by Kevin Higgins, will read from their work. Afterwards the annual Over The Edge Summer Open-mic will take place. Everyone who has a poem or story to share is most welcome to take part. So, if you have some writing you’d like to read to an audience this is your opportunity to do so.

The MCs for the evening will be Kevin Higgins & Susan Millar DuMars. All are welcome to attend.

Launch of 'Away With Words' Volume 2 @ Ballybane Library

That’s LIFE, Brothers of Charity Services invites you to the launch of Away With Words Vol. 2, edited by Susan Millar DuMars, in Ballybane Library on Wednesday July 14th at 11am.

Kevin Higgins of Over the Edge will launch this collection of poetry and writings from the work of the Away With Words groups from Galway, Ballinasloe, Gort and Athenry. This is a celebration of their gifts and work. Come along and support them.

Over The Edge presents readings by poets, Dave Lordan, Rosemary Canavan, Elaine Feeney & Drucilla Wall plus the Galway launch of Lead Skeletons, a new poetry collection by Jennifer Liston, at Sheridan’s Wine Bar, 14-16 Church Yard Street, Galway on Friday, July 9th, 8pm.

Jennifer Liston was born in Limerick and grew up in Gort, Co Galway, Ireland. She now lives in Adelaide, Australia. Her first collection of poetry, Exposure, was published by Ginninderra Press in May 2003. Her second collection of poetry, 17 poems: one for every year of innocence, was published by White Wave Press in 2008. Jennifer was a member of a poetry group in Sydney, a member of the Canberra Closet Poets group, and is a founding member of the Adelaide Closet Poets. She is also a member of the South Australian Writers’ Centre. She has performed her poems at several Irish and Australian poetry events. Lead Skeletons is Jennifer’s third collection of poetry and is published by White Wave Press. The book will be launched on the night by Kevin Higgins.

Dave Lordan was born in Derby, England, in 1975, and grew up in Clonakilty in West Cork. In 2004 he was awarded an Arts Council bursary and in 2005 he won the Patrick Kavanagh Award for Poetry. His collections are The Boy in The Ring (Salmon Poetry, 2007), which won the Strong Award for best first collection by an Irish writer and was shortlisted for the Irish Times poetry prize; and Invitation to a Sacrifice (Salmon Poetry, 2010) which is just published. Eigse Riada theatre company produced his first play, Jo Bangles, at the Mill Theatre, Dundrum in 2010. He has lived in Holland, Greece and Italy, and now resides in Greystones, Co Wicklow.

Poet, children’s author, teacher, visual artist, Rosemary Canavan was born in Scotland, brought up in County Antrim and lives in Cork. Her first collection, The Island (2004), was published by Story Line Press, and was short-listed for the Vincent Buckley Poetry Prize. Her second collection, Trucker's Moll (Salmon, 2009), was launched at the Munster Literature Centre's Éigse 2009 festival. In 2001 she was Writer-in-Residence for Co. Kerry, and from 2006-2007 she was Poetry Editor for Southword. Her two children’s books, Lios Chaitríona and Caitriona agus an tÉan Oir, were published by An Gúm, and she has read at a number of festivals including the Cheltenham Literary Festival.


Drucilla Wall has published poems and essays in Cream City Review, Kalliope, The People Who Stayed: South Eastern Indian Writing After Removal; Eating Fire, Tasting Blood: Breaking the Great Silence of the American Indian Holocaust; Times of Sorrow/Times of Grace: Writing by Women of the Great Plains/High Plains; and True West: Authenticity and the American West. She serves on the executive board for the Western Literature Association and holds membership in the Wordcraft Circle of Native American Writers. She teaches writing at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. Her first collection of poem, The Geese At The Gates, will be published very early next year by Salmon Poetry.

Elaine Feeney was born in Galway in 1979. She has been writing since her early teens. In 2006 she won the North Beach Nights Grand Slam and in 2008 won the Cuirt Festival’s Poetry Grand Slam. She is a keen page and performance writer. Elaine has performed at many venues including The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Electric Picnic, The Vilenica Festival and The Cúirt International Literature Festival. She was the chosen writer on a One Sheet collaboration in 2010 with an artist and a graphic designer and this work is currently on exhibit across Dublin. Her work has been translated into Slovene. Elaine lives in Athenry with her partner Ray, and sons, Jack and Finn. Her debut collection of poetry, Where’s Katie, is just published by Salmon Poetry.
